5 Tips for a Killer Blog Name Ideas
Coming up with blog name ideas is like naming a baby: it seems easy until you actually have to do it.
Before we review the blog name generators, let’s look at what aspects make up a blog/domain name that rocks.
Here are some guidelines to keep in mind when picking a domain name:

-
Save
#1: Include Your Niche Keyword in Your Domain Name
Example: Blogfiti.com
It’s no mistake that my website about blogging has the word blog in the domain name.
This helps with SEO (search engine optimization) as search engines can deduce my website’s topic from my URL.
If you can, include your niche’s main keyword in your domain name.

-
Save
#2: Go With a “.com” Extension
Example: Google.com
While less traditional extensions (like .net and .co) are becoming more frequently used, I still recommend opting for the good old .com to give your new blog an instant air of legitimacy.

-
Save
#3: Avoid double letters
Example: Mommuffins.com
Double letters add confusion and lead to mistyped URLS. Even though MomMuffins.com is kind of super cute.

-
Save
#4: Avoid hyphens
Example: My-Blogging-Live.com
Hyphens can look a bit spammy, especially when the world doesn’t know (yet) how awesome you and your brand are.

-
Save
#5: Make it Memorable
Example: Avocadu.com; Blogfiti.com; Batcat.com; Mommuffins.com
Having a memorable domain name is important! You can use a variety of tactics to make your URL stand out.
- Put your own spin on a familiar word (Avocadu.com),
- Smush two words together (blog + graffiti = Blogfiti.com),
- Rhyme (BatCat.com),
- Be alliterative (MomMuffins.com).
Sidebar: this is what happens when you click on BatCat.com. 😂

Bonus Tip: Don’t lose sleep over it
With the blog-o-sphere officially being overcrowded, it’s unlikely that you will be able to apply all of the above tips. That’s a-ok, friend!
While it is important to have an awesome domain name, most readers are going to be coming to your website through search engines and social media links.
Very few people, especially in the beginning, are going to be typing your URL into their browser.
So, don’t worry too much about your domain name, just pick one that feels right and run with it!
Blog Name Ideas FAQ
What is a Good Blog Name?
As mentioned above, a good blog name should:
- Be short (according to domain name statistics)
- Include your keyword
- Avoid double letters
- Be memorable
- Not have hyphens
- End in, “.com” if possible
How Do I Choose a Blog Name?
Don’t overthink it. Many would-be-bloggers get hung up on this first step and never actually start their blog.
Use the blog name generators below to find a name you like that’s available and register it right away!
(Remember, you can register it for free through this special HostGator deal.)
How Do I Name My Blog About My Life?
Naming a blog about your life, a lifestyle blog, can be more challenging because by definition they cover many topics.
An easy way to name your blog about your life is to give it your name.
For example, my lifestyle blog would be www.KellyThoreson.com (which, apparently, is already taken by another KT out there somewhere).
This leaves your options wide open to blog about anything you want. If you want to blog about healthy recipes, fashion and working out now and then later switch to just recipes and workouts – there’s nothing stopping you!
(Remember, you can register it for free through this special HostGator deal.)
Explanation of Domain Name Generator Search Options & Features
For each blog name generator, I’ve listed which search options and features are available. Let’s take a look at what each one means:
Available domain: this feature will tell you right there within the generator whether or not a particular domain is available for purchase.
Begins with: allows you to designate what letter you would like your URL to start with
Ends with: allows you to designate what letter you would like your URL to end with
Extension: the extension is the part after main name.
Example: Google.com’s extension is, “.com”.
Purchase: this feature allows you to purchase the domain in the generator without having to go to another website.
Random: this search option will provide you with a list of randomly generated domain names which can be useful if you’re stuck.
Related suggestions: this search option generates suggestions related to the keyword you typed in.
Rhyming: generates a list of words that rhyme with your desired keyword. Rhyming is a useful way to make your URL memorable!
Social media handle: checks to see if a matching social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr, etc) handle is available.
Example: for www.blogfiti.com the generator would check to see if Blogfiti was an available Twitter handle. It’s not cause it’s mine, but you can like and follow me on Twitter if you’d like! 🙂
Sounds like: allows you to view a list of results that sound like your main keyword.
Example: if your main keyword is fashion, a sound-alike word is fission and your URL could be www.fissionfashion.com which is pretty catchy!
Word Count: this option allows you to specify how many words you want in your URL.
Example: one word would be Blogfiti.com while two words would be BlogfitiBlogging.com

Instant Domain Search has an advantage over the other blog name generators: the social media handle availability check.
However, you cannot purchase a domain within the site.
When you click on, “BUY” it will redirect you to GoDaddy to purchase the domain.
Note: if a domain is available, you can purchase it from whatever registrar you’d like.
PRO TIP: You will save money if you register your domain name and sign up for hosting at the same time. Use my guide to help find the perfect host for you:

This is what it looks like when we search for our trusty old BatCat.com using Instant Domain Search.
If the domain is available, it will say, “BUY” to the right of it.

To use the social media handle feature in Instant Domain Search, click the ellipsis next to the “WHOIS” icon.
A drop-down box will appear listing Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest handles.

FYI: Wondering what’s up with this WHOIS thing you’re seeing everywhere? In short, WHOIS refers to information about the owner of a domain that is kept in multiple databases run by multiple entities. You can learn more about WHOIS by clicking here.

I like DomainWheel because of its unique features: random, rhyming and sounds like.
These can be handy if you’re just looking to get your creative juices flowing in your search for blog name ideas.

What I’m not crazy about is that when you click on, “View Details”, it takes you to a completely unrelated Blue Host page. If you’re going to use DomainWheel for the random, rhyming, and sounds like options, skip the, “View Details” button.

The great thing about BNG’s blog name generator is that it comes up with the most creative options!
It has loads of search options and features, however, in order to purchase the domain, you’ll have to go to an outside registrar.

Lean Domain Search is owned by Automatic, the same company that owns WordPress. As such, it comes with one useful feature that the others don’t: an option to buy your domain, host your site and install WordPress all in one.

I will say that the downside to this generator is that you cannot specify which extension you’re looking for.
However, it defaults to the, “.com” extension which is what you should aim for anyway so it’s not really a hindrance.

Please note: there is another domain name search available through WordPress, but it lacks the search options and features that the others have which is why it didn’t make the list. If you’re curious you can check it out here.
